The Sass of Chicago/Cliches in Chicago Reunionish Special

Thursday, June 30, 2016

Maybe one day I can have a reunion with myself.
-Sebastian Bach

-

Before I blogged on Cliches in Chicago, I blogged on a tumblr called Sass of Chicago. I unfortunately, and stupidly deleted all of the writings on that blog, in a moment of dramatics. I cursed that blog, and my previous single life, because I was sooo in love with Chuck Cuevas. Now, as a quasi-adult, I understand that you should never give anything up, especially your poignant, beautifully written and hilarious blog about your adventures in dating (okay...maybe kissing..) terrible boys. But now I'm an adult, and I know to never delete your blog for anyone.

I have a story for all of you. In my fit of annoyance/fed uppance with Chuck, I signed up for Tinder. I remember my fondest foray into Tinder, meeting Jake Reagan and becoming completely infatuated with him. And of course, I remembered my worst- meeting that stupid architect Ted, that called that painting crispy and having him annoy the fuck out of me.

When I downloaded it, of course I wasn't serious about it- I was just curious. I mean, can you blame me? I had the earth shattering realization (once again) that Chuck Cuevas was a fucking asshole, and was completely embarrassed that I thought for even a split moment that things would be sunshine and rainbows. And the realization that regardless of how long we've been together or how much fun we have, Chuck may never stop spontaneously disappearing. And can you imagine that? ME, ELIZABETH LEONA BUI dealing with this bullshit when I have kids with him or something?

"Sorry, kids, your dad just disappeared because he can't deal with shit...again."

My daughter would look back at me in her Kate Spade for girls dress, and throw her mini Maisie bag on the fucking ground. As my son sits there, in his J.Crew button down and bright Chubbies shorts and baby Sperries. They'd be like, "Um, mom, are you really putting up with this bullshit?"

And as I sat there, I realized, "HOLY FUCK, I've been through a lot with Chuck."

Yeah, he was all, "We're going to be okay, we're going to get through this, there's going to be good times and bad times, but we're going to get through this. We're going to be fine," but holy fucking shit, this MF has a lot of fits. And I understand, there's been times when I get mad or upset, but I've never just disappeared or not talked about it.

BUT I DIGRESS.

Anyways, so I made a Tinder, and then promptly deleted it.

Blair: What kind of tacos?
Guy on Tinder: It's a simple recipe. I just wrap a tortilla around my dick and stick it in your mouth until the secret sauce comes out, most girls find it delicious ;)

EW.

BOY, BYE.

Maybe the universe just wants me to be alone forever, and to be in Chuck Cueva's crazy limbo. Just watch, guys, I'll be fifty years old and Chuck will still be telling me, "I need you to wait two years for me."

Okay, I feel like my life has the makings of a romantic comedy- I've met so many guys in quasi-cute ways, and spontaneously. It just is missing the part where I fall in love and meet the perfect guy. In my romantic comedy, these meet-cutes end in me going on a date with them, finding out that I don't like them at all in about .26 milliseconds, and then having the date end in them begging me for a second chance or another date.

I've been reunited with a guy from three years ago, I've been asked out randomly in Target, I've even met a guy on a fucking elevator (and we have had MANY moments in said stupid elevator), but this is real life. In real life, perfectly handsome guys aren't everywhere, and in real life you go months without having sex or going on a date. And when you do go on a date...it's definitely not like you thought it'd be like.

And as I sat there reminiscing, I couldn't help but wonder...what exactly have these guys been up to?

-

Haz- He is on my Do Not Social Media Stalk list- he is probably still living with the girl he dated as soon as we broke up, who he claims he's super in love with. Yes, he did confess his undying love to me like two years ago while they were dating.

Tom- He and his girlfriend recently broke up, and he's just been posting pictures of him being alone or with friends, broing it up. How awkward.

Bill- Has a girlfriend as awkward, condescending, and fake artsy/wannabe hipster as him.

Sexy Drake- Oh my gosh, why is he still super freaking hot. It's okay, guys, I'm just going to keep reminding myself about how he tried to do butt stuff with me, and that he's not that super hot (but he is)

James- Still dating this girl, is going to be living with Chuck... whatever.

Alejandro- Oh my god, even this thirsty MF has a girlfriend...what the hell?!?

Luke- HOW ARE ALL THESE GUYS GETTING GIRLFRIENDS?!?

Johnny- In Peoria for his residency, pining after Elizabeth Bui. Just kidding guys, he's in residency and probably macking on nurses.

Jake- Living in Milwaukee, being stupidly charming and handsome.

Toronto- I don't even need to Google this one- he has a girlfriend now too! I see him all the time when I go to work, because his job is working facilities in the building where our office is located. He actually is the only guy on this list that I'm on great terms with!

Chuck- I refuse.

Louis- He's busy wearing stupid J.Crew cardigans and dressing like a Kennedy while being an asshole and offending people, probably.

Ted- Besides creeping on my Snapchats, who knows? Probably still desperately searching for love.

Rafael- Probably out banging half of Chicago- without using a condom.

Ezra- Probably still heartbroken over his ex- but I heard he's transferring schools!

Target Guy- Who knows, and who cares?

Johnson- WHERE ARE ALL OF THESE TERRIBLE MEN FINDING GIRLFRIENDS?!

Jason- UGH, he still looks stupid handsome too. I ran into him last week while I was buying tacos and I walked away.

Carter- Still dealing drugs, and showing up in Blair's summer classes.

Derek- Still single, and still not getting back with his three year ex girlfriend even though he clearly loves her.

Nash- Still creeping on Snapchat, and hoping that Chuck and I don't get back together.

-

And the person I know you're all curious about...

Blair- Living life, working towards her goals and being undeniably sassy. Still going on adventures, still dating terrible men, and still blogging about it.

Be Nice To The Boys in Chicago, Elizabeth

Tuesday, May 10, 2016

“Life is hard enough as it is without choosing someone difficult to share it with”
-Greg Behrendt, He's Just Not That Into You

-

"You're a three for three, do you know what that means?" My uncle asked, drunkenly, as I stood there awkwardly, trying to escape his grasp.

He looked deep into my eyes, and stared at me, intensely.

"You're young, you're beautiful, and you're intelligent."

I thanked him, and as I tried to walk off, he grabbed my forearm.

"Be nice to the boys in Chicago, okay, Elizabeth?"

-

Hell fucking no, I wasn't going to be nice to the boys in Chicago, because they were completely NOT nice to me. I had thought about it, in retrospect, all the guys that I've dated (or not dated), and at first I thought to myself, "Elizabeth Bui, maybe you're being a little bit harsh on these guys, maybe they aren't so terrible," and then I thought about it for a couple more seconds, and came to the realization that actually, the guys that I've met since the beginning of this blog, are actually pretty damn terrible. If anyone should be getting nice treatment, it should be me, Blair fucking Bui, for all the nonsense that I've had to deal with from these fuckers.

Ted Chang

  • Was excessively clingy and weird, and said that he could see me as his wife after like, three dates.
  • Was a neanderthal and embarrassed me in the Art Institute
  • Got me drunk off moscato, and banged me, even though I didn't really want to
  • Used disgusting adjectives to describe normal things- called my dress yummy, called a PAINTING crispy. UM, IS A MANET PAINTING FRIED CHICKEN NOW?
  • Could never talk to him, so I always had to go see movies so I could ignore him
  • Bossed me around, like a typical stereotypical weird Asian guy

Louis Romney

  • Sent me a list of problems he had with me, like what?
  • Was super cocky, super Republican, and always mentioned how much older he was than me
  • Ran away during one of my work events, when Kayresia asked him what his intentions with me were
  • Has five hundred side hos, and probably a secret wife and kids in Hawaii
  • Always talked about how he hated Hispanic, and poor people

Rafael Mancilla

  • Claimed that he had kidney problems, and that he couldn't go on a sushi date with me, but then still came over and banged me
  • AND then totally tried to ghost me
  • Basically a twenty three year old fuck boy, with a schwag job, that smokes weed day and night

Target Guy

  • Asked me on a date in a grocery store
  • Basically told me that he's a pedophile, and that he banged a fifteen year old when he was twenty two
  • And then he thought I would go home with him after that???

Johnson Baker

  • OH MY GOD
  • DON'T GET ME STARTED
  • ON THIS MOTHER FUCKER
  • Thinks he's the bomb dot com, and can't seem to understand that there's (a fucking lot of) women out there who don't want to date him
  • Followed me for twenty blocks, asking me why I wouldn't date/bang/WHATEVER him
  • And then in Target too
  • And then called me inconsiderate and acted like I was at fault
  • Non-stop asked me why I wouldn't date him
  • Didn't know what foccacia bread was
  • Didn't know what sugar packets were
  • Kept acting like something was wrong with me, just because I wouldn't date him
  • Basically was an idiot, and a gremlin man-child that would not let shit go, and nonstop asked me why I wouldn't date him, and obviously had weird feelings for me, but was incapable of moving the fuck on

Zayn

  • BASICALLY, he took advantage of me when I was really, really, really sad and depressed, and he slept with me even though I wasn't into it, and then he wouldn't leave me alone and kept acting like I was acting weird because I liked him
  • WHICH I FUCKING DID NOT EW

Carter Chavez

  • Literally a fuck boy, and an idiot
  • Sent me pictures of him smoking with his foot
  • HIS FOOT
  • WHO DOES THAT?!
  • Would not stop trying to tap me

Jason

  • Basically told me he didn't have to time to "cultivate" (TF?) a relationship, but he's literally on every dating app imaginable
  • Talks like a 70's frat star, and the first time he met me, he punched me on my right upper arm, and sometimes I still think it hurts to this day

Derek

  • Kept asking me for another chance, and acted like he deserved one, was annoying and super persistent

Kevin

  • Got like, $100 worth of free consultations
  • Basically tried to tap me, got rejected, and then stole my business idea

Chuck Fucking Cuevas

And then I sat there, incapable of making that last list. I looked at that name, and I didn't even know what to say. Chuck and I really have had our ups and downs this semester, and we really have been through a lot. He sat there, and watched me date (and bang) other guys, right in front of him, and he didn't say anything. And I understand that he didn't say anything because he didn't think it was his place, but in the end, it bothered the hell out of him, and he just didn't say anything. And don't I deserve someone that will say something? Someone that cares so passionately about me, that they'd go after me and say something?

And it's not like Chuck never says anything- there was the time that he was adorably annoying as fuck, and kept sending me passive-aggressive messages in order to talk to me, when I was ignoring him. But I had only ignored him, and walked away because he wasn't there for me, when I needed him to be. And I walked away because he didn't say anything, and because he let me.

And he's been around recently, as much as I want to pretend like everything is perfect and dandy, and magical between us- it doesn't change the fact that he can't be with anyone right now. AND YES, it's sweet that if he could, it would be me, in a heartbeat, but I just... I need him to say anything. I need him to say something, and I need him to give me something that's worth waiting and fighting for. Because right now, I honestly just don't know.

And the last thing I said to him was on Thursday morning, and he didn't say anything back. And now it's the night before he's going to leave, and he still hasn't said anything. And I know it's silly, and I should just say something- but I'm always the one who says something. It wasn't even a big crazy message, I literally just messaged him back something normal- and he just didn't say anything!

And maybe it's because we both don't know what this is, or what's going on. I mean, I really don't...I've been sneaking around secretly with Chuck, but who knows what's going to happen, or if it's worth it. And I wish that I was as fearless as I used to be, and that I could just dive headfirst, and belly up. But the same question keeps asking me, "Did you crawl out of the pit he threw you in, and climb that mountain...just for this?"

Is Chuck really it, Blair?

And I wish I could say I knew, but I don't. I just know that he hasn't said anything- and I need him to say anything.

The Massacre of Spring 2016

Saturday, April 30, 2016

I don't like boys. They're kind of annoying.
-Michelle Wie

-

"It's a text from Johnny," I said, surprised. The last time I had seen him was when I was taking Cora's dog, Jughead for a walk. Johnny had tried to make conversation, and although I was polite, I clearly had no intention of ever talking to him again. The last time I spoke to Johnny, it was just him yelling at me, asking me why I wouldn't have sex with him and why I wasn't attracted to him. For Fuck's sake, why are men guys boys constantly asking me why I won't (insert action here) them?

...I won't get into this, or else I'll end up posting the exact same rant that I blogged about when I stopped talking to Johnson.

When Chuck and I broke up, I didn't feel anything- I was so desperate to feel something, and to fill a void in my life, that I LITERALLY tried to fill a void. As in I kind of, sort of, aka I did, sleep with quite a few guys. Some of them were rebounds, some of them I genuinely thought could be something... but all in all, it was a terrible idea. I ended up filling that void, and feeling something- by focusing on myself, my strengths, and working on things that made me passionate. I was happy from my friends and loved ones, and I never looked back at the indiscretions that I had made.

Johnny: What is your blog address?

"He's trying to fuck you," Chuck said, looking at me. Although I like Chuck, there are still some moments when I just want to laugh and say, "Well, yeah."

"Well, yeah, Chuck." I said, laughing. "But he's leaving soon."

"He's trying to get a good bye smash." Chuck commented, nodding.

"No way in fuck."

Chuck knows about my blog, obviously, but I'm definitely not at the point where I want him to read the things that I've written- even if we were both in a different place when I wrote them!

An excerpt from, Chuck Cuevas Stinks:

"And then I thought about it, he definitely stank when we dated, I just never smelled it. But he didn't physically stink (well... At least I don't think he did, he may have), but he stank metaphorically, he just had this glaring problem with him that I ignored because I was in love with (or at least I thought I was)."

I know, I'm so coy. But anyways, back to the story at hand.

There was no way that I was going to respond to Johnny, and part of me wanted to be the crusader for girls who are constantly harassed and annoyed by guys that think they're entitled to bang them, but I kept my mouth shut.

-

Shay: You tryin to get some or what

I looked at my phone, nearly dropping in it shock.

"FUCK, here we go again." I thought to myself, shaking my head. Why was this shit constantly happening?

Blair: What do you mean
Shay: You know what I mean
Blair: WTF SHAY

I screenshotted the message, and sent it to Shane and Kayresia.

Shane: Lol thirsty AF
Kayresia: Lol smh

SHAKING MY DAMN HEAD INDEED, SHAY. I thought that the two of us were purely platonic friends- after all, he did help me start my business! I had recently discovered that my guy friends were dropping like flies, namely after

  1. Trying to bang me, and then getting rejected, then getting mad
  2. Trying to date me, and then getting rejected, then getting mad
  3. Constantly asking me why I won't date/fuck/WHATEVER with them
  4. Constantly trying to tap me and then getting entitled when I tell them to go fly a fucking kite
Among other things.

And I know it sounds so typical female, but I genuinely did want to be friends with them! I just wanted to live in a world where I could hang out with them, drink beer, shoot some nonsense, and then watch terrible TV- like I did with Shane! He and Matthew were the only ones left standing after the Massacre of Spring 2016, as Zayn, Johnny, Johnson, Carter, Kevin, and Shay were voted off the island. It was tiring- having them annoy me, and then eventually, get mad and blame me for being at fault. Because apparently, it is wrong for a woman to refuse a man nowadays, APPARENTLY if guys put in effort with a woman, they are entitled to them.

Shay: I don't want it lo
Blair: No, I'm dating someone. Ew, no. You're gross, bye.

I mean, I wasn't dating anyone- the only thing I was committed to was Grey's Anatomy on Netflix- and I didn't really care, or want to waste energy on trying to define what was going on with Chuck and I. We aren't involved with each other...or anyone else really. But Shay didn't have to know that, it was none of his business, or really...anyone else's either.

It wasn't that I was ashamed of Chuck- I'm really not. As a matter of fact, I think a lot of people would be overjoyed. For god's sake, my brother Julius probably loves Chuck more than he loves me! It's just with things being so up in the air, there was really no point in saying anything about it, not to mention that when you start telling people things, that's when things get real. And I'm not ready for that, for other people to know or get involved, and for it to be a thing.

OKAY, and maybe because it's kind of fun sneaking around. I couldn't deny that it was kind of exciting to have people ask where I'm going and where I'm at, and to sneak back into my apartment building early in the morning, or to pretend like I'm staying, when I'm throwing on a crop top and skinny jeans to go see Chuck. It's fun, and I know that eventually people are going to find out, and that this whole sneaking around nonsense will stop, but for right now, I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't enjoying it.

Which is also why Johnny Belcher can stay the hell off my blog.

Shay: Who is that

And also why Shay can stop texting me.

Nothing Except For A Courting Device

Wednesday, April 20, 2016

“A #GIRLBOSS is someone who’s in charge of her own life. She gets what she wants because she works for it. As a #GIRLBOSS, you take control and accept responsibility. You’re a fighter – you know when to throw punches and when to roll with them. Sometimes you break the rules, sometimes you follow them, but always on your own terms. You know where you’re going, but can’t do it without having some fun along the way. You value honesty over perfection. You ask questions. You take life seriously, but you don’t take yourself too seriously. You’re going to take over the world, and change it in the process. You’re a badass.”

"Blair Bui Consulting has launched!
Running on hopes, dreams, and dedication (more like blood, sweat, tears), Blair has officially launched her business, Blair Bui Consulting.
Thank you to everyone for their support, and for the BB team (Shay, Shane, and Blair)
Special thanks to Cora, Matthew, Kevin, and everyone who listened to me talk nonstop about how excited I was."

-

I looked at the launch email, and smiled. This was happening.

My only client was a guy that wasn't paying me a penny, but that was okay, because I had a business and she was mine, all mine.

As I walked down the street, Anders appeared out of no where, waving at me. Still cute as I remembered, hair still sandy blonde, still ridiculously handsome.

I awkwardly waved, and then was abruptly interrupted.

"EY, you!"

I turned around to see a random European man. It was about 9 pm at night, and I was wandering the streets of Chicago alone. Within the two seconds that I had said hello to Anders, there seemed to be no one in a one mile radius of me and this sketchy European man.

"FUCK, I just started a business and I'm about to die already," I thought to myself, as I called the most recent person that I had texted.

"I have faith in you, I think you're going to make it happen. You don't seem like a lazy person at all, and you're motivated."

"And I'm a bitch," I added.

"Well, that's necessary in business," Will said. I was glad that Serena's boyfriend (basically husband) was such a rad guy, and he gave me a little bit of motivation in my current client-less state. Although we were running on faith and dreams, hope and magic, I couldn't help but wonder why I wasn't rollin' in Benjamins Jeffersons already. I had put up the posters, I had made a plan, and I was determined! I know that businesses take time to set off, but I really was excited.

Not to mention, I already sent that launch email out to people, including my ex boyfriend, who absolutely cannot know that my business is stagnant.

Although I was loving the fire that I had found within myself, I couldn't help but feel a little bit lonely. I hadn't gone on a date in a long, long time. And my strings hadn't been really plucked (as in I enjoyed it) since Rafael and I hooked up in early February.

"Maybe you should meet someone rad?" I thought to myself. It wasn't a crazy idea, having a boyfriend wouldn't be the worst thing ever. I'm a very particular lady, and I gave up on dating after going on so many dates that left me feeling disappointed. It's not like the guys weren't nice...ish. Or decent- there was just no fire or magic. No sparks. And that's what I want. As I thought about it, my train of thought was interrupted.

Blair: CAN WE ACKNOWLEDGE HOW CARTER TOLD ME HE'D GET ME FIVE CLIENTS IF I BANGED HIM?
Will: Aren't you giving away free consultations anyways?

Oh, right. In a desperate attempt marketing strategy genius idea to get clients, I sent out a blast saying that I was going to give out free consultations to the first 16 people from our email list that signed up for consultations. So far, none of them bit.

Blair: Just to people in our email list. The first 16!
Will: Tell him ten clients and you'll have a deal.

Never!

Kevin: I'm well aware us guys are fuckers. I'm guilty as charged hahaha
Blair: I'm going to print my posters, and I know because you tried to tap me freshman year

He really did, though. The cliffnotes version is that Thirsty Kevin went around telling people that we were a thing, and that I was his girlfriend...when I ONE HUNDRED PERCENT WAS NOT. During that time I was dating Haz, and Kevin was constantly trying to tap me- his attempts were weird and desperate. Long story short, I eventually told him that I was dating Haz and that I didn't like him, and he got mad and claimed that he never liked me. And this is after he tricked me into a date, and told everyone we were a thing!

BUT that is a story for another time.

Kevin: Lol nahhh

He did, you guys. He's totally lying.

Kevin: Not that there's anything wrong with you. I just don't consider myself that thirsty

He is, you guys. Don't be fooled.

Blair: Lol okay Kevin.
Kevin: If I wanted to sleep with you, I'd make it happen hahahahahah

I took a deep breath.

Time and time again, I always find myself in the position where I have to tell an entitled guy that just because he wants to bang me, doesn't mean that he gets to bang me. Just because he likes me, does not mean that I am obligated to like him too. LIKE HOLY FUCK, is this such a hard concept to grasp?! Just because you want to stick your peen inside of me, doesn't mean that I magically want you.

BOY, BYE.

Blair: Uh, no.
Kevin: I'd get all Romeo and Juliet romantic

This goes to show further how he does not pay attention to me, other than trying to tap me. If you've read even a sentence off of this blog, you would know that I hate cheesy mushy romantic garbage. I hate the weird moments of magic that people try to force, and I hate long ass good morning texts. I hate weird romantic gestures, because the fact of the matter is, they never come from guys you want.

NO, I'M SERIOUS.

I would have loved a weird romantic gesture from Chuck, or Rafael, or Louis. But I've never gotten them from them, I've only gotten them from cheesy desperate losers who need to use weird romantic shit as a crutch to get me to like them. Because girls are blinded by that shit (not me), and seem to believe that if a guy does cheesy shit for you, then that is love, and that is magic. And that is not the case.

Blair: You've already tried that. That definitely doesn't work on me. You need to read women and their personality.

God, Kevin better start paying me if I'm going to teach him how to get women.

Kevin: My version will be on point.

Ew.

Kevin: I'd get you with corny one liners baby

WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED?

Blair: Read at 11:35 pm

I screenshotted the messages and sent them to Shane and Shay.

Shay: Lmfao is he for real! No wonder his relationship didn't work out... Sounds like a complete ass smh

Shane: Lol I've been away from my phone and come back to whatever the hell is going on here

Awesome, now I have absolutely no clients. At least before I had one client. He just wasn't really paying me anything. My business was not a courting device, I wasn't going to deal with Kevin anymore. Of course I was glad that he had gotten better and we helped him...I just didn't want to help him like that.

I went back to my list of desperate attempts marketing strategy genius ideas. I had attempted to get an endorsement from the guy who ran Humans of UNI, but he just politely said, "Fuck you, Blair, you didn't let me tap you so screw you and your business."

OKAY, I'm paraphrasing, but that's kind of what happened. The guy that ran Humans of UNI, long story short, was basically obsessed with me last year when I was dating Chuck. He would message me every week asking for photoshoots and to meet up with him- he wanted to make an album and portfolio of just pictures of me! He would not stop messaging me, or leaving me alone, even when I didn't answer his messages and tried to swerve him. He knew I had a boyfriend, but he literally would not go away. Of course I was kind of flattered, it was kind of sweet in a super annoying and creepy way, but his persistence was ridiculous. It was gross.

I stopped for a moment.

WHAT IF I'M GOING TO NEED JOHNSON'S HELP IN LIKE A YEAR?

I groaned. At this point, if I'm going to progress my business, I might as well decide to never date again.

I had asked one more person for help, as my team needed a design person. I asked Derek for help. And spoiler alert, he tried to use my business as a courting device too.

Derek: I'll need to hear more about the company first haha when can you meet up to talk more about it?

Um, never?

I knew what Derek was trying to pull, he was trying to lure me into a "business meeting" so he could get his second chance at dating, and banging me. This wasn't happening.

AND, he definitely did not need to hear more about the company because the concept was pretty damn simple. I, Blair Bui, do relationship consultations in all aspects.

Blair: This should be sufficient.

I texted him the site link, and thought it would appease him. It did not.

In the shortest way possible to explain this, Derek basically decided to send his criticisms and judgmental bullshit, questioning my company and how I ran it. Just because I wouldn't meet his ass to give him another chance!

I groaned.

I decided after all of this that I would take care of it myself. I wouldn't need any help from any guys that I swerved- I didn't need UNI guy's endorsement (well, I kinda do, he has hella influence on campus), or Derek's design skills. I was going to do this all by my damn self, and it was going to be perfectly okay.

"Blair, your business is literally nothing except for a courting device used by creepy guys. Your assets are -$30."

I sighed. I walked out of the library, and looked up to see Chuck's apartment building. A light was on in his window, although it was late at night. Even though the fire I found from my business was satisfying me emotionally, I definitely was lacking physically.

I looked at the window, and then looked away. Although for a split second, I will admit that I doubted myself, I didn't go through all of this to go back to square one. And I made this business for a reason, to help people be strong enough to move forward and pave their own paths- and I wasn't going to give up on it. I valued it, and I believed in it, even if it seemed like every damn guy only saw it as a courting device.

The Fire Within

“If you believe that what you’re doing will have positive results, it will— even if it’s not immediately obvious.”

-

"Fuck, you're so hot," Chuck said, as he pulled me in for a kiss. He came from behind, pulled my hips backwards, and then-

"Chuck, oh my fucking god," I gasped. This wasn't happening. We kept kissing, as Chuck kept going and I kept gasping.

"I can't believe it's been this long," Chuck said, as he pulled me in for another kiss. "Blair, you have no idea how much I needed this. How much I need you."

Was he fucking serious?

I gave him a look, and he corrected himself, "Not just like, physical sex stuff, but like taking care of me and shit."

I looked at him, and said,

"CHUCK I NEED TO GET CLIENTS."

I woke up, nearly gasping for air. My hair stuck to the sweat on my neck, and my inner thighs were also sweaty from the blazing Chicago heat. Of course, my apartment building still had not turned on the air conditioning.

I hadn't been on a date in a while, or wanted to go on a date for a while. My company was keeping me busy and I was focusing and working on myself. Yeah, Chuck was out and about going to parties and having the time of his life, but that didn't matter. That knowledge and that boy had absolutely no part in my future. Although, there was a slight problem regarding Chuck.

You know, the whole spontaneous- AND COMPLETELY UNWANTED- sex dream thing. But that wasn't the biggest concern I had, as a matter of fact that was just a small blip on my radar.

Because my business had kind of hit a tiny bump.

Okay, so maybe I had no laptop, no clients, and everyone probably thought that I was absolutely and utterly crazy...but that wasn't going to stop me.

Actually, no, I had a client. I just wasn't getting paid to help him. Kevin had started to fall a little bit backwards, and it made me worry, and lose a little bit of faith in myself. What if I wasn't helping him? What if I was absolutely delusional and this whole thing was a bad idea?

I laid there, in bed, analyzing the entire situation around me. It was actually okay if Kevin slid back a little bit- getting over break ups are never easy. Hell, I was trying to make a business because of break ups! It's never a straight forward process, there's a lot of back and forths, falling back into old ways, getting lost in the sauce, and being a total mess. And if you're not- then it hasn't hit you yet! Chuck had never gone through any of this, and it was because he was still in his crazy kind of denial where he locked himself in his room and talked to no one, only doing homework.

I looked at my phone, to see a text back from Carter.

Carter: I see you're in a motivated mood...I feel like I'm dtf.

Gag.

Blair: You're not going to F me.
Carter: You can't blame me for trying. :)
Blair: You're not getting a slice of this apple pie.

I hadn't gone on a date for a minute, and I was actually one hundred percent perfectly okay with that. I wasn't single, I wasn't taken (definitely not), but I was building my empire. Working on this business had given me an even greater sense of fulfillment than any guy had ever given me. I was in charge, and I was passionate about something that had made me feel absolutely fucking amazing. Butterflies in my stomach, heart beating faster, ridiculously cheesy excitement...I had found fire. And I had found it within myself.

"But your only client isn't paying you except in coffee, you have no laptop to run your business, and you haven't really made any progress since you made the website and ordered fancy business cards."

Reality never fails to hit.

I crawled out of my bed, and decided that I was going to finally be ballsy and put up the posters that I had made the day before, for my business. With tackboards all over campus, I'm sure my posters would have appealed to someone out there.

-

As Kayresia and I sat on the bus, a familiar face appeared. Bertram got on, immediately making eye contact with me, and then turning away.

"FUCK, I am not in the mood to see Chuck's ass after having that freaky deaky dream," I thought to myself, as the door closed.

Bertram turned around, only to end up sitting right next to me. That's right, buddy, the only seat available is next to yours truly.

"Hi, Blair, Kayresia."

"Hey Bertram," I said, as Kayresia also said hello to him. This was only sufficiently quite awkward. He scanned me from head to toe, acknowledging my spaghetti strap eyelet romper and my bare face. I had woken up late that morning, so makeup had not been a priority for me. Especially in this eighty degree weather- I did not have time to schedule my face melting in this heat.

Bertram looked at me with judgey eyes- it's not like I looked like I was falling apart. For god's sake, Chuck was practically bursting at the seams and smelled like death. And he was judging me?

"Just you wait and see, buddy, I have a business now and even though I have no computer to run it on, and no clients, and people probably think I'm crazy- I'm going to take over the world."

-

I printed out 36 posters...which transformed into 18 back-to-back posters, and then purchased some colorful push pins to put these posters all around campus.

As I posted these posters, and walked around campus, I have to admit that I actually felt productive. I ended up going to Ulta to get a brow wax. I was feeling like a girl boss, and I felt like I could take on the world with my new sense of motivation and dedication. I had the hustle, and the passion. She flattered me, talking about how I'm going to do big things and whatnot, but the problems still loomed over my business.

No clients.

No laptop.

And so, I decided to do something about it. And by do something, I mean that I decided to drag Shane to Best Buy to get a computer. I was going to take charge of my own destiny, and I was going to make my business boom. Because if I didn't, who would?

Me, Elizabeth Bui

“There are secret opportunities hidden inside every failure.”
-Sophia Amoruso, #GIRLBOSS

-

And even though that snapchat of Chuck stared right back at me, of him at that party, all I could do was smile, because I knew that I was exactly where I should have been. In less than a week, my life has completely changed. Not only now was I completely off guys, but I was in charge- I was my own boss, not that I wasn't before.

-

I felt great helping Kevin with his break up, it was this crazy weird sense of accomplishment that I had in helping him. He was in a place that I had been in before- it wasn't a place you wanted to be in either. There were so many mistakes that I had made, so many experiences that I wished I hadn't had to go through. But now, being able to help and guide him, in a way that made it worth it. I steered him away from the mistakes that I had made, and was able to tell him everything that I wished that I could hear. And trust me, in loving Chuck Cuevas and being thrown in a ditch, I had learned a hell of a lot.

The last time I saw Carter he and I had talked about our insane incompatibility, but he told me that he was glad all of this happened, because every person that you meet is a puzzle piece. They play a role in the grand puzzle of things, Carter wasn't just there to try and get a slice of my apple pie, he played a crucial role in me realizing that my friendship with Regina wasn't the best. And after that conversation, I couldn't help but wonder what role people play in my life, and what role I play in theirs. And the most obvious role I was playing was in Kevin.

Somehow, I was helping him, and it seemed like I was genuinely making an impact. And I loved it.

Kevin: Well still wanting that TLDR to send to Callie about the housing

Even though Kevin seemed so confused and perplexed, I just somehow knew exactly what to do. Callie was a petty bitch, and I knew how to handle a petty bitch.

Blair: You say, "Callie, you need to leave. You're the one who broke up with me- I want to stay here, and I want my friend to live with me. I've accommodated you for the past two years and I'm not going to do it anymore. You need to find a new room." And then she’ll say, "But don't you want to get back together Kevin blah blah blah..” And then you say, "No, I don't see us getting back together, especially after you hurt me like this. You need to find a new place.”
Kevin: WOW. Thank you, you are the best. Here goes nothing!
Blair: You're welcome, tell me what happens!

And as crazy as it sounds, I actually felt this overwhelming sense of happiness for him. I had helped Kevin and guided him towards dealing with his shitty ex. It wasn't hard for me to know what to do, from the experiences I had I knew exactly how to had someone like Callie. I knew how to word things exactly to convey what Kevin was thinking and feeling- even when he was completely lost in the sauce.

“Wow, I’m really making a difference,” I thought to myself.

My phone went off with a notification, it must have been Kevin thanking me for my help!

Kevin: Well nothing was accomplished.

Shit. Maybe I wasn't as helpful as I thought.

Blair: What happened?
Kevin: She said, "Well you can't always get what you want. you need to leave, Noah and you wanting to live with him is not my problem. You have the ability to leave, where as I do not. This isn't accommodation, I was trying to accommodate you. I didn't even need to this in the first place, you're being unfair.” And then I said back, “I dont always get waht i want. it is your problem cause im going to be your roomie. yeah you do. go to another building. of course it is. and you wanna talk about unfair?”
Blair: Okay and then what happened?
Kevin: “Im not going. live in another room, you werent even gonna be able to live with him if i hadt broken up with you. (LIKE I WOULD RATHER HAVE THAT WTF?) This is a compromise, i tried to help you guys, but couldnt. i tried to move out before but you didnt coordinate me. This is on you. (she didnt try that hard)” And then I said back, “Okay ill see you next year then!”

I knew my shit, Kevin standing up for himself and being assertive should have been enough to get her to do something. Callie had been used to him accommodating her for a year and a half, there was no way that him standing up for himself, finally, didn't shake her. Not to mention that no self-respecting girl would want to live with her ex-boyfriend that she dated for almost two years!

Blair: You both suck at arguing. Tell her, "If you think you're doing this to annoy me, you're not. We aren't getting back together and I don't care. You really want to live with your ex boyfriend next year? I'm not leaving and you need to find a new place, I don't care where you go or what you do, you can't stay with me. I'm not moving, you have plenty of other rooms you can go to."
Kevin: Oh god, I don't know if I can.

I knew that he couldn't, because I was once in the position he was. I had always been there for Chuck for emotional support, even after we broke up- I was there for him. And when he finally wasn't there for me, instead of standing up for myself and telling him to fuck off, I just stopped talking to him and sneaked away. And God, I wished that I had stood up for myself and told him to fuck off.

Blair: I know you can't, because you still care about her, even though she doesn't give a fuck about you.

Harsh, I know, but the poor guy needed to hear the truth.

Blair: Do you really wanna live with her, and not be able to move on?
Kevin: I do not, but i dont want to be push around. I want that room
Blair: Exactly.
Kevin: Worst case we have the same unit. I think by then ill be strong enough to get over her and not give a shit.

Oh hell no- that just opens up the idea of getting back together and having sex and all the other nonsense that comes with exes.

Blair: No. Worst case you move and don't tell her.

I went to bed, having faith in my advice and Kevin. Things were going to work out- they just had to!

As I crawled out of bed, I saw a text from Kevin.

Kevin: Blair, we won
Blair: I knew we would lol. I told you to listen to me!
Kevin: But your methods were great
Blair: She was shocked that you actually stood up for something
Kevin: Yeah feels thrilling
Blair: And that's just the beginning.

It was. Kevin's newest chapter was just beginning.

Kevin: She can bitch to her friends all she wants about this
Blair: She will...but you won!
Kevin: Put me in coach! You deserve coffee most definitely on me.
Blair: I'll take it. What's your next step?
Kevin: Ignore her. Delete her from my life
Blair: Good. Delete those pictures!
Kevin: Today's a good day.

I remembered my first good day after my break up, it made me feel happy knowing that I had helped Kevin reach his first good day after his break up. It was the beginning, the start of a new chapter, and the point where he could finally leave his shitty ex and move on with his life. And I had helped him- me, Elizabeth Bui.

Blair: Don't delete her on social media though you want her to see that you're doing great without her lol.

Okay, guys, I didn't say that my advice was perfectly perfect.

Blair: And off course it's a great day, it's the beginning of a new chapter!
Kevin: And I even got my friend in
Blair: I know. You just gotta be strong

I guess I never really thought about it, but I had always really liked giving relationship advice and helping other people with their relationships and loved ones. For god’s sake, I was a relationship and love centric blogger, whether I wanted to admit it or not. All the guys I've dated, all the situations that I've found myself in, the crazy, the ridiculous, and the unbelievable, it all actually taught me a lot.

After only two phone calls and a couple long chat conversations, I had Kevin from crying over his ex to happy as a clam, starting the newest chapter of his life. Not only starting- but he was genuinely happy and genuinely enthusiastic about what the future held! And somehow I had helped with that.

And then I sat there, in my Cellular Biology lecture, thinking, “what if there's other people out there as lost as I was? As lost as I was?” People out there who needed some real, genuine, flat-out honest advice about whatever situation they were in. I had given real, honest, and genuinely good advice to Kevin- which had worked! And had helped him!

And then the idea appeared in my head- I could be a break up coach…. or a relationship consultant.

Blair: Am I really helpful
Kevin: You tell me?
Blair: Lol what I'm asking you if I'm helping you
Kevin: I'm asking a rhetorical question, because it's obvious you are ahahah
Blair: I know but to what extent

I took a deep breath, before moving forward.

Blair: Like good enough to help other people?
Kevin: Yeah, I'd say so
Blair: Hmmmmmm
Kevin: You are saving me from traps in the future
Blair: Thank you, Kevin.
Kevin: Nah thank you!

The idea was in my mind, and once it was planted I couldn't stop thinking about it. So, excitedly I texted Yael.

Yael: Oh god.

What a hater.

Was the idea of me being a relationship consultant/break up coach really that crazy? I had the experience, and I gave real, genuine, honest advice! And good advice too- look at Kevin! I looked down at the scribbles on my notebook- was my idea really that crazy?

My thought was interrupted by my friend Shay walking out of our lecture hall. Shay had his own business, and he had plenty of advice.

And so, after Starbucks, having a business meeting, thinking of a game plan, conjuring name ideas, designing a website on Wix, ordering business cards, and a whole lot of nonsense, Blair Bui Relationship Consulting was born.

And I was just starting when it came to building my empire. It felt so good- I was the owner and operator, CEO, this was my baby. My daydream and crazy idea, it had been born. And I wouldn't have been there, hair in a mess and business cards on the way, if all of this hadn't happened.

If Chuck dumping me on Friendsgiving hadn't happened, if Rafael hadn't ghosted me, if Johnson hadn't followed me twenty blocks, and if Derek didn't end up being a total dud. Each and every person I had met, every guy that had dumped me, every guy I had dumped, every terrible date and embarrassing hook up, had led to this moment. Every relationship I had seen or witnessed. All these experiences had shaped and given me knowledge. All the things I learned, all the hard lessons, they led me here.

And I couldn't help but feel more excited than I had in months.

Plus One

"To be an ideal guest, stay at home."
 -E. W. Howe

-

"Are you coming to the dessert party my wife is throwing?" my boss asked me, as I walked into his office.

"Yeah, of course!" I said, as I realized that I had completely forgotten about it. My boss was a rich older man who lived right across the street from Millennium Park. His building was full of basketball players and celebrities, as he was basically loaded. His wife was the typical successful older lady as well, throwing fancy parties and events to network and impress people.

One of them being this dessert party, with prosecco and wine.

"You know you have a plus one, right?" He said, eyeing me carefully. I looked at him awkwardly, and nodded. He made a small face before saying his next response.

"But you don't have to bring one if you don't have one."

I stood there, awkwardly. His response to this could have been one of two things-

  1. Blair, you bring a different boy to every event.
  2. Blair, last time you brought a plus one, he ran away.
  3. Blair, you are lonely AF.
"I'll bring one," I said, adamantly, as I walked off. My red ballet flats tapped across the surface of the wood floor, as I scurried off to my desk.

"FUCK, BLAIR, why did you say that?"

-

Blair, you bring a different boy to every event.

To be fair, there have only been two big work events that have occurred, and the boy I brought to the first one I thought was going to be my plus one for life. I literally thought that Chuck and I were going to be forever, because I was young and naive, and I thought that he was going to be my plus one from then on forward. To infinity and beyond.

And okay, I kind of, sort of thought that the second boy that I took to the second work event was going to be attending a couple more, but then he ended up running away! Not my fault.

OKAY, and I'm twenty and relationships aren't forever, so no one should really be expected to bring the same person, unless it's their spouse, to every single freaking event. ESPECIALLY if they're months apart!

Blair, last time you bought a plus one, he ran away.

I'm going to make this as painless as possible, by stealing the little snippet of a story from a previous blog post. I'm not going to go into crazy detail- I think if I do, it'll make me want to throat punch Louis Romney.

*coughs and opens up storybook (aka blog archives)*

I ended up taking him to this fancy work event, and as we all sat there in Carnivale, casually enjoying our dinner, Louis decided to offend a lot of people. He acted super classist, super sexist, and well...super conservative. He asked people if they were lower level employees, and it was just a huge mess overall.

Louis is... ultra conservative. He only cares about the economy, hates poor people, hates Hispanic people, doesn't believe in feminism, He is actually Romney and Trump in twenty nine year old youngish man form.

Anyways, we were all somewhat casually enjoying this nice dinner, when suddenly, Kayresia turned to Louis, and asked, "Louis, what are your intentions with Blair?"

A gut wrenching feeling hit me, as I turned and looked at him, noticing that he looked like Kayresia just smacked him in the head with a frying pan.

I didn't need for Louis to say that he wanted to be with me forever, I just needed him to not care that she did that, but instead Louis got up, and ran away. Louis completely disappeared, and then reappeared twenty minutes later with two HUGE drinks. In front of my entire staff.

And to this day, I don't know what was more embarassing about that incident...him running away in the middle of dinner, or him acting ultra conservative during dinner.

Everyone at work laughed at the fact that Louis ran away, and thought that he was an asshole. That's how that saga ended. No one ever said anything to my face really, except Cora when she said he was a fucking asshole. But I'm sure everyone talked about it plenty behind my back, all, "Poor Blair."

Blair, you are lonely AF.

Okay, first of all, I am not lonely AF. I am living a good life where I watch Grey's Anatomy and eat kale in my bed. And where I hang out with my friends, drink beer, and do Pilates. I just have no boyfriend or romantic prospects (although people would tell you otherwise), and I'm single AF.

I scanned my brain, and ended up going through every guy I've been on a date with in the past six months.

Chuck Cuevas:
I shook my head immediately. That can't and won't be happening. Because then the two of us would laugh and reminisce about the last time we went to a fancy rich people party, feel the feels about the good times, and then things would be messy and weird. And also, my coworkers would tell him that they've missed seeing him around, and they would assume that we are getting back together.

Plus, even though most people think that Chuck is skinny and awkward, not the hottest, and kinda gross, there's just something about him in nice clothes that makes me weak at the knees, and think, "DAYUM." I can't explain it, for whatever reason, I think Chuck Cuevas is a hottie.

Louis Romney:
Hell to the no, did you not read that previous story? Plus, besides the fact that he is an asshole, he's been pretending that he doesn't know me, because I was the side ho when he had a med school girlfriend.

I am still convinced that he has a wife and kids.

Ted Chang:
People joke that I dumped him because he didn't know what a painting was, but in reality we had absolutely nothing in common, he was weirdly in love with me, and a complete neanderthal. He was SO incredibly stupid, and also short. No way in fuck am I ever talking to him again. He was also incredibly cocky and really weird and annoying, entitled as well.

Sometimes I wish I had told him the truth and that I couldn't stand his ass, instead of chickening out and saying that it was because I still had feelings for Chuck.

Rafael Mancilla:
God, he's sexy. But also a twenty three year old fuck boy. So, pass.

Ezra:
Literally went on one date. No thanks.

Target Guy:
He told me that he banged a fifteen year old when he was twenty two, and then friend to bang me...no thanks.

Johnson:
There are sooooo many reasons why this is an immediate no, besides his annoying gremlin man-child ways, the fact that he's short, and that he's absolutely entitled and crazy. Also if I can't stand him at a nice brunch place, no way in fuck is he going to a fancy AF party at my boss' condo. I can't have him asking me what petit fours are. SORRY NOT SORRY.

Carter Chavez:
He would probably show up high, and then I would slap him across the face, and then he would be sexually aroused by that. I don't really want to be seen or associated with him, and also he's basically classless.

Jason:
Ugh, he's hot. But he also talks like a 70's frat star and is kind of an asshole.

Derek:
Also into me, definitely not into him. No thanks.

Maybe I needed to put an ad out or something.

WANTED: a plus one for a fancy party that my boss is throwing that will impress and dazzle everyone, and more importantly not embarrass me. The last guy I brought was embarrassing, my coworkers are still laughing about it.

You:
-are smart, educated, and intelligent
-have culture and class
-but can also joke around, be funny or a little ridiculous
-have a good career (or path)
-are funny, charming, and a great conversationalist
-taller than 5'9 (I'll compromise)
-do not have any glaring problems
-are not an asshole or Neanderthal

Me:
-is 5'5, 105, and adorably petite
-drinks beer, does Pilates, and is chill AF
-Asian American (but looks ethnically ambiguous)
-is clever, funny, and a pretty great conversationalist
-has hilarious and ridiculous stories
-watches the same terribly funny tv shows you do
-dresses fashionably and very well, has refined style
-will laugh at your terrible jokes
-sassy, brazen, bold, and sure

Pros:
-delicious desserts
-alcohol
-great networking and conversation
-potentially fall in love....or make a great friend (I'm a great wing woman!)

Losing My Shit

Wednesday, April 13, 2016

"Even if it's 'fighting for,' that's what happens in rom coms after the boy fucks up, and instead of leaving his ass the girl stays because he 'fought for her.'"
-Willa Vincenzo

-

I was losing my shit, and I had no idea how to remedy it. There was a variety of different things making me lose my shit, as of the moment.

  1. Kevin's break up, and how he's suddenly become my young grasshopper. My giving him advice and helping him out has made me think about the Chuck thing more and more. SUMMARY- giving him advice has made me realize that Chuck Cuevas is a fucking asshole.
  2. Chuck Cuevas. I'm not going to even go into detail about this, for fear that I will lose my shit.
  3. My mother's surgery.
  4. Carter being Carter.
  5. My perpetual singledom.
  6. Normal Blair Stress.
But the biggest thing stressing me out was Chuck Cuevas, of course. Chuck fucking Cuevas with his stupid cotton v-necks and his stupid Chuck-ness. I was losing my shit, forgetting my keys and accidentally locking myself out of my apartment a bunch of times. Running around feeling stressed and pressed, annoyed and absolutely fucking insane.

And so, after a day of brunching and running errands with Matthew, I took a deep breath, and knew what I had to do with Chuck. And the advice that Willa had given me, the advice that I so desperately needed and had forgotten, that had magically appeared at the perfect time.

-

Dear Chuck,

I'm going to be flat out honest with you, and say that I contemplated never talking to you again, and then running away, but that's something that I don't think I can do. I wish I could say that I was strong, and that I haven't been losing my shit over the past few days (over a variety of different things, not just you, so don't flatter yourself), and I wish that I could say that we are best friends again and perfectly platonic. But that isn't the case, and you know it isn't the case.

I don't know how I feel, and I don't know what I want. I don't know how I feel about you and what I want from you. I don't know how I want you to feel, and I don't know what I want you to want. I just don't know. It's tough, and it's complicated, and all of these thoughts have been clouding my mind and tearing me apart, because it really is tough. So, in the best way I can, I'm going to dictate how I feel, in the best ability that I can.

Because even though I don't know how I feel, and I don't know what I want, I know what I can't do.

I can't emotionally support you and take care of you. I can't be in your life watching you do exceptionally well without me in it. I can't be in your life watching you have the time of your life, and being absolutely positively happy without me. I can't hang out with you, and fall in love with you again. I can't smile when you text me, or send me a message. I can't laugh at your ridiculously lame jokes, or the shade that you attempt to throw. I can't feel my heart beat faster when I'm around you, and I can't have sparks run down my spine whenever our arms touch. I can't secretly wish that you'd kiss me. I can't wonder if you're secretly checking me out. I can't wonder if you're thinking about me, or if I'm in your thoughts. I can't wonder how you feel about me, and why you don't want to be with me. I can't pretend I'm okay when my heart is breaking and I'm falling apart. I can't be emotionally drained, and I can't wish that you'd notice me, like you used to. I can't miss the times we had, and I can't imagine a future with you.

And I'm terrified that these things are going to happen, and they can't. You never felt torn apart or heartbroken, because you never had the chance. You never got the chance to miss me or wish that we could have what we have. You were okay after we broke up because I was still around, and we were still friends- but that was completely emotionally draining for me, because I was so madly in love with you. And for months, I wished that you would change your mind.

Willa once told me, "Even if it's 'fighting for,' that's what happens in rom coms after the boy fucks up, and instead of leaving his ass the girl stays because he 'fought for her.'" I wanted to stay because you made an attempt- but then I realized that you weren't fighting for me. You gave me a two year wait list, not even a promise, and I can't do that.

When people care about people, when they find someone amazing that they can't lose, they do everything in their power to keep them. And you weren't even doing that, you weren't even fighting for me- you were asking me for fight for you. I have done that, time and time again, and I can't keep doing that. Especially for someone who won't fight for me. You sat around and never said that you wanted to be with me, but couldn't, and you sat around and never said anything when I was having sex with other guys. And I don't deserve that.

I deserve magic, and fire, and sparks. I deserve someone who wants to be with me, no matter what. Someone who can't stand the thought of me being with anyone else. Someone who wants to make me laugh endlessly, and smile for the stupidest reasons. Someone who thinks about me, wonders what I've been up to, and wants to hear everything as soon as they see me. A person who can't imagine a life without me in it, someone who sees the value and magic in me. Someone who thinks I'm absolutely fucking amazing, even when I'm not. Someone who would move mountains, and someone who gives a fuck.

You say you miss the dates, the kisses, and everything, but I don't think it's enough if you're willing to lose it. I know you can't right now, and I understand. So understand when I say that I can't right now.

This isn't good bye, this is a see you later. And we'll see each other again, someday. When I'm ready to be friends, or when you're ready to ask me on a date. You have my number, and you know my Facebook. And also where I live. I like red velvet cupcakes, and you can blast Cecilia and the Satellite on a boombox.

Don't respond to this message, unless you're ready. It'll just make things harder. I still want you to watch my stories on Snapchat and to be friends on social media and stuff, I just can't be the friend you need right now. But someday I'll be ready, maybe it'll be a couple days, a week....or two years (you asshole).

Don't fall apart, please. Shower, wear deodorant, and eat. We can't be friends if you die.

Blair

My Soup Snake

"'Soul mates' is what you aim for, but soup snakes is what you get sometimes."
-Mindy Kaling

-

Chuck had made the effort to message me- quite enthusiastically, if I might add, which made this decision even worse. He seemed to be happier than he had been, the ghost of the person that he used to be was fading away, and the real Chuck was coming back. It was something I could just sense, something that I could just feel, something that I just knew. That's how it was when it came to him.

I won't say the two of us are soul mates, most definitely, possibly, most likely not. It terrifies me sometimes thinking that Chuck could be my soul mate, especially considering that he is ridiculously confusing, tremendously annoying, and tremendously ridiculous. It's a genuine fear, honestly, that he is my person- it's also a slightly exciting idea, but don't ever tell him that I said that. I don't want to boost his ego like that.

It's the universe laughing at me, saying, "Blair, you can't have a real functional and spectacular relationship, but you get to be in this weird emotional limbo with this crazy that could potentially be the love of your life." Because out of all the places I could be, I am here, wondering what exactly I am going to do, what exactly I should do, and why me. Why me, why have I been so blessed to be in this spot with Chuck?

Because it's not that easy as walking away- because my being around is making him happy, and making him okay. And Chuck is very much not okay.

Chuck was fine (as far as I know) when we first broke up, because I was still around. While I was emotionally destroying myself by being in love with him, and being there for him, and loving him, he was living a very happy life. Because I was still in his life- doing all these things for him, and he didn't have to be my boyfriend. He didn't have to do anything, and I was still around, making him happy and spending time with him. But I wasn't fine, because I was falling apart, madly in love with him, and it was tearing me apart.

And then, one day, I realized that he couldn't just have me around without being with me, he couldn't have his cake and eat it too, and then I left. And that's when Chuck started isolating himself even more, he started losing all that weight, and getting very greasy. That's when Chuck started to smell bad, and look bad, and that is when he was starting to fall apart. And that's also when I started to be happy, and I started to be okay.

And I'm not saying that being with Chuck didn't make me happy- it did. It did 150 days ago, when we were still dating. But when we were together after we broke up, it was emotionally confusing and heartbreaking.

And that's where I am right now, wondering what I'm going to even say or what I'm going to even do, because even though he's happy and he's okay now- what if I start falling apart? I can't go into this, potentially hurting myself, and breaking myself, so that Chuck can be alright. But at the same time, can I walk away knowing that he could potentially fall apart to pieces?

A small, selfish part of me thinks that's maybe what I need to do- to just leave him, so he can fall apart to pull himself together. To realize what he's really lost and what's really going on. But what if he falls apart, and he only gets worse?

BUT I CAN'T be there for him, and give him everything, and let myself fall apart at the same time either. I'm at this point, at this game, where it's my move- except I don't know what I'm going to do. I wish I could be the girl that didn't care, the girl that could just laugh it off, and walk away. But I'm not.

"You're a hopeless romantic at heart," Matthew said, looking at me. "You really are."

I gave him a smug look. "I am, but it's a secret, and you can't tell anyone." It turned out that Kevin just wanted someone to talk. I had thought that he was hitting me up because of a really bombtastic selfie that I posted, but it was genuinely because he wanted advice. He was the Blair in his break up, and he needed some advice- and I was glad to give it. There were so many things that I wish that someone had told me while I was going through it, it's definitely a tough thing to go through. And I was glad that I could help him, even if it was Kevin (more on that later).

I decided after talking to him, and getting those messages from Chuck, that I would need a little time to think about it, what I was going to do next. I knew that I had two choices- I could either be there for him as a friend, when he needed me, or I could walk on and move on with my life. It definitely wasn't a small decision, and I knew I had to think about it.

The rest of the night, Matthew, Kayresia, and I did homework and hung out, as Love and Hip Hop played in the background. It was nice to just relax and spend time with them, not thinking about what was going on with my love life.

Suddenly, my phone went off.

Carter: You want to come to my place around 10 before class? I do owe you something ;)

"I just got a text from him asking to come over to his place before class," I said, as Matthew typed on his computer.

"From who?" Kayresia asked, from the kitchen. She was working on our Physics homework, as I blogged and Matthew wrote his paper.

"Carter," I said, laughing a bit. Was he really trying to do something now?

"Oh hell naw, you have to tell him heeellllll noooo," She said, singing the last two words. I laughed, and typed a response.

Blair: What do you owe me? I work until 10:30.
Carter: I do owe you a kiss.

“I like to think I'm helping them by hating them. I'm reminding them that they aren't God's gift to humankind.”

March 17th, 2016

I stood there, just me and Rohan, as we waited for the Uber that he had called. It was St. Patrick's Day, and Anders and Johnson had completely disappeared. Shah was still in the bar, trying to get the waitress' number. And we stood there, just the two of us. Rohan was definitely cute, and Anders had suggested that he was the best one out of their whole group...

"So what's the deal with you and Johnson?" he asked, as a drunken mob walked past the two of us. People were still going pretty hard, as it was St. Patty's day. Rohan was on my wavelength though, where beer and pizza at one's apartment sounded much better than navigating through Lincoln Park, past the hordes of drunk people.

"We went on a couple dates, and then I-" I paused for a moment, and coughed. "I mean, we decided that we were better off friends, so he invited me out tonight!"

Rohan looked at me, curiously.

"Nothing ever happened between the two of us, we never banged," I insisted, adamantly. Not even if Johnson was the last man in the entire would would I EVER consider even giving him a high five. (And this was before he had followed me twenty blocks, now I am tremendously disgusted by him).

"So you friendzoned him? Are you sure you don't want to bang him?"

And with those two questions, the coffin was nailed shut. My chances of dating any first year med students had been sealed, especially the one standing right next to me.

-

It had been almost a month since Johnson and I became friends again, and for whatever reason, I seemed to think that he could be somewhat useful, and somewhat a decent friend.

"No way in hell he's going to give your number to that guy," Matthew had said, that night at the bar.

"Maybe he's gotten over it, and he's going to be a good person and give my number to Rohan," I responded, as I took a bite out of my cilantro chicken tacos. "He's not that terrible." Matthew gave me a look, as he picked up another couple friends.

"Really, he's not terrible.

"You know he likes you, and you know he can't tell the difference between pepper and brown sugar!"

That was a very valid point. Very legitimate. I took a sip out of my water and shrugged my shoulders. Maybe Johnson wouldn't be a terrible person about it?"

-

Johnson: Like I've never been in this position before. It's unorthodox.

I groaned. Matthew and Shane were right- was I really expecting Johnson to be normal about it? Johnson Baker is a simple minded, and incredibly entitled man. He's tremendously annoying, and if you couldn't tell by the fact that he followed me twenty blocks interrogating me as to why I didn't want to date him and why I wasn't attracted to him, he is, and was the worst type of guy possible. I have never understood guys that think they have claim on a woman- like how Johnson thought there was this whole huge thing between the two of us, as if we were lovers and now I was being a huge bitch about it.

I'm not some stupid girl who thinks she can be friends with everyone- hell, do you see me never talking to Chuck again? But there's the difference there- Chuck and I were in love for almost two years, if any of this stuff happened between us (which it wouldn't, because we aren't friends, I would never think any of his friends are cute, and I wouldn't try to be friends with him), he would have every damn right to be upset or act weird.

But Johnson and I literally went on like, two dates. I gave him like, one peck that was absolutely disgusting, and I wasn't attracted to him. And we are friends- to the point where he talks about banging what he considers to be MILFs, I talk about dates, and he has absolutely no fucking claim on me, whatsoever. BECAUSE WHAT WE HAD WAS LITERALLY NOTHING. And I don't know why it is so hard for his tiny brain to understand this concept, but he literally has no reason to act as if I'm off limits, or his, or as if this is some crazy weird situation.

And it's not just on the whole me thinking his friend is cute thing, it's also a general thing that he does. Every time I turn down a guy, he acts like a vigilante for them, as if he is their masked hero, under the rude and completely uncalled for rejection by Blair Bui. He judges me, and acts like I'm this huge bitch that just rejects guys for my amusement- and guess what? I'm not! I'm just looking for that magic- and I damn well deserve it!

I had known our friendship wouldn't last for long, considering the fact that he obviously is feeling some kind of way, and he is such a petty asshole about it, but there was a small part of me that hoped he could be just a normal dumb ass, and that we could be friends. And not this petty, entitled, annoying, stupid, dumb asshole.

Blair: What position?

I bet you five hundred dollars, that he says "setting up a girl that I went on dates with, with someone I know" or something along those lines.

Johnson: Idk like trying to hook someone up with people in the same social circle. Particularly someone I went on a couple dates with.

HE LITERALLY HAS NO CLAIM ON ME WHATSOEVER.

Okay, I would be mad too in his case if we were madly in love, or dated, or he was my boyfriend, or something VALID. Or even if we had sex or made out!

BUT WE LITERALLY WENT ON LIKE TWO DATES AND I DIDN'T LIKE HIM AND HE CLAIMED HE ONLY WANTED TO BANG ME.

OKAY, and the fact that he acts weird about it, really annoyed me and blew my mind. I had refrained from yelling at him, or bitching at him many times before. All the times that Kayresia, Serena, Shane, Matthew, etc had told me that they would have been completely done with Johnson's ass, I just bit my tongue and didn't say anything.

Johnson: I'm not jealous/mad or even uncomfortable about that part, but like I said it's unusual.

"What a fucking liar," I had thought to myself. I must have said it to myself too, because Carter stopped listening to his lecture, and turned to face me.

"Are you okay?"

I must have been extremely stupid that day, because not only did I think Johnson would do me a solid without being a complete asshole about it, but I had also agreed to study with Carter. Who also, was annoying as fuck.

"I'm fine," I said, ignoring him.

"You really should be studying," he said. I gave him a dirty look too, because he was THREE lectures behind me. Carter and I had been done, long before his whack ass told me that he would finally take me on a date when school ends. As in, when the semester is over, a month from now. He was entitled, just like Johnson, except whereas Carter didn't find ways to remotely annoy me like Johnson did. But he was still on the same level of annoying, where he thought he was so great, that I would wait a month for him.

BITCH, I didn't even wait for Chuck's ass, and I was with that mofo for a year and a half!

I started to type up my response, and at this point, I knew that our friendship was over, and that I wouldn't be able to date anyone else from his class either. With all the nonsense he said to my face, who knew what this jerk said about me behind my back?

Blair: Okay literally for like the ten millionth time we went on three dates, I didn't like you and I wasn't attracted to you. Life moves on, people aren't attracted to people and people don't want to date people. It's a normal phenomenon and it happens. And it shouldn't be considered unusual because shit happens, unless you take personal offense, which you shouldn't because it was three tiny dates and not a big deal at all.
Johnson: And like I said for the millionth time I don't care or have an issue with hooking you up with my friends, I really don't, otherwise I would have said no. It's just a position I've never been in before. I have no problem with it, I've just never done this before.

"BITCH PLEASE!"

Carter turned and looked at me, as I ignored him again.

Blair: You've never set people up before? It's like a normal thing that normal humans do.
Johnson: Yeah I've done it before.
Blair: Then it shouldn't be unusual at all!

And this is the part where Johnson Baker, the gremlin man-child nearly dies.

Johnson: I mean here's I think what gets me. Literally right after I said I'd be friends with you, you start asking me to hook you up with people, and I really get the feeling that's my only use to you. I really don't care who in my school you see or bang, but if I'm just an accessory to that then I see nothing in it for me.

"I see nothing in it for me."

I won't be friends with guys I've dated or gone on dates with, or whatever, because they are never cool about it. They are never chill, and at some point, these assholes always make me uncomfortable by asking me (or interrogating me) about why I won't-
  1. bang them
  2. date them
  3. both
And it's something that genuinely bothers me, because the agreement of being friends with your previous date (or whatever), WITHOUT any romantic vibes, is that you are literally fucking friends, and that's it. It's not like I cuddle or go on dates with these mofos, I literally do normal friend activities, and talk about guys, and they talk about girls. And I always hope and pray for a normal friendship, and it never happens, because they always say they see nothing in it for them- because apparently, me being their friend is nothing. Me, sitting there, talking to them, listening to them, hanging out with them is "nothing in it for them." Me, being a friend- "nothing for them." And they say this, because do you know what they would consider something to them?

ME BANGING THEM.

OKAY, when was it impossible for guys and girls to become friends? To hang out normally without asking weird shit, or interrogating someone for twenty blocks? Because Johnny did the exact same shit, and he asked me why I wouldn't have sex with him, and once I told him I wasn't going to- he said he was out, because there was nothing in it for them.

Am I missing something there? Because when I tell someone that WE ARE LITERALLY PLATONIC FRIENDS AND NOTHING IS EVER GOING TO FUCKING HAPPEN, it means, WE ARE LITERALLY PLATONIC FRIENDS AND NOTHING IS EVER GOING TO FUCKING HAPPEN. It is not pre-foreplay. It is not a segue-way to fucking. It is the friends path, where we hang out, drink beer, eat pizza, and guess what- ARE FRIENDS.

And I promise I don't flirt with them, or walk around half naked. I always meet them in public places, pay for my own shit, and insist that we are friends. FRIENDS. And I swear to you- Johnson Baker is a terrible wingman. He would literally announce to EVERYONE that I wanted to meet a specific guy and make me look thirsty as hell. LITERALLY. But I'm not here to talk about how he obviously likes me, and is an embarrassing man-child.

Blair:
  1.  I know I did that, I did that to reinforce that I didn't want to date you and wasn't interested in you. And I thought I would be able to set you up with some of my friends but none of them are interested. Oh well.
  2. We were on the track of being normal friends until you followed me for twenty blocks? Do you not understand how absolutely crazy and ludicrous that is- especially calling me inconsiderate and acting like I was at fault??? Because I definitely wasn't and that was weird as hell and also quite rude as hell.
  3. I have plenty of guy friends and if you need a reference they'll tell you that I'm a pretty chill lady and that I like beer, but none of them weirded me out and offended me like that, which is why I think I have the not-so-subtle hint of coldness and sass.
  4. Idk why you expect me to be something more than a friend because this whole time it seems like you've got some unresolved feelings and it's awkward, it's obvious from how rude AF you are when it comes to me and guys, the false assumptions and judgment and questions of my character
  5. I don't need anyone to meet people, I just said he was cute! It happens, life happens.
Johnson: Look, I really don't care to point fingers and argue

That's because all the fingers are pointed at you.

Johnson: I think it's best we just cut things off.
Blair: Good, because I don't think I can tolerate any more accusations and interrogations of my character.

I put down my phone, done talking to that asshole, and looked at the asshole next to me. Carter looked at me, shocked. And that stupid look on his face simply irritated me, if we're going to be honest. My phone went off, with another text from Johnson, attempting to converse further and to end things on a good note.

But I knew that my fate was sealed, I would not be going on a date with Rohan, or possibly any other med student at this school.

Zero Stars

A bad review is like baking a cake with all the best ingredients and having someone sit on it.
-Danielle Steel

It had been literally three days since I had heard from Jason, the last thing he said to me was "Think Friday may work best for me."

What the fuck was that even???

At first, I was completely convinced that it was just because he was shy and whatnot, but then as time progressed, I couldn't help but become paranoid.

"Maybe Romney gave you a bad Yelp review," Serena said, as I analyzed the current situation.

"I don't think life works like that, Serena," I said, as I rummaged through my bag for a hand cream. I was balancing my cell phone on my shoulder, as I searched the abyss of lipsticks and post-its.

"I mean, think about it, I think that's the kind of shit guys do- you said they were friends right?"

She did have a point.

"No... he wouldn't do that."

C'mon Blair.

"Okay... I don't know-"

"EXACTLY," Serena said, interrupting me. "He could have given you a bad Yelp review."

I mean, even if he did, were things really so terrible between us that he would give me a bad Yelp review? I thought about that for a second, and then I started laughing out loud, to myself.

Okay, yeah, he would give me a review with the caption, "I wish I could give her zero stars."

I could see it now:

ZERO STARS. If I could give zero stars, I could. Blair Bui and I dated, and she and her friends are absolutely insane. They wouldn't stop asking me what my intentions were with her. She's too sassy, too brazen, and too bold. She's petty, young, and foolish. She is absolutely crazy and sent me texts when she was drunk calling me OLD AF. Don't date her.

On the other side of my romantic turmoil, Carter was proving to be a total bust. After being so butt hurt about my non-caring reaction to everything he did, my friends provided me some interesting advice... they basically told me to stop being such a huge bitch and to tell him that I liked him.

Blair: I'm going to admit that I actually like you, but you can't use it against me.

And ZILCH.

But as this all happened, I thought to myself, and could not believe that Romney could have left me a bad Yelp review...and the guys in the College of Medicine made up a big chunk of my dating pool! And so, I decided that I maybe needed to not burn every bridge I had to the pool of guys there...

Blair: Hey, Johnson, I was thinking that even though things didn't work out, I would still love to be friends!

C'mon, you can't judge a girl for doing what she's gotta do. Johnson may be kind of weird and a little bit desperate, but his friends definitely were not...

The Shy Guy

“But she wished she had had the guts to go up to him and say hello. Or possibly break his legs, she wasn't sure which.”
-Stieg Larsson, The Girl Who Played with Fire

***The following post continues from the previous post regarding Carter.

"No, she's talking about the shy guy!" Serena said, on the phone.

"You forgot about him!"

"Guys, I haven't even gone on a date with him!"

"You might as well put him down," Kayresia said, with a laugh.

"I have a good feeling about shy guy," Serena admitted. And to be completely honest...I did too.

-

ONE MONTH AGO:

I had been texting Ezra, and as I walked to visit Regina at work, I stopped completely in my tracks. Sashaying towards me, was Louis Romney.

"Was he always that short?" I thought to myself, as he walked closer. It was unmistakably him, Republican navy v-neck sweater, slacks, grandpa loafers, and all. Did he ever dress just casually?

He spotted me, said hello, and then turned around, stopping to talk to me. I looked at him, side eye and all, it was only until he was standing right in front of me that I realized that this idiot was holding a fucking banana. A FUCKING BANANA.

"Hey, Blair, how are you?" He asked, as he shoved the banana in his mouth.

"I'm fine, how are you?"

And then suddenly, I remembered something.

"Your friend's cute, set me up with him!" I said, looking at Louis. He looked at me, shocked, and I swear you guys, he nearly choked on that banana chunk in his mouth.

"Who, Muhammad?" Louis laughed awkwardly after that, as I probably made an involuntary bitch face.

"No, the one in your picture!" I took out Facebook on my phone, and showed him.

"OH, you're friends with Jason?"

Could he not understand English, or what?

"No, he's cute."

"OH, so you want me to set you up with him," Louis said, while completely judging me in the process. What did he care? He missed his chance to date me, and his friend was really cute and single.

As we said good bye, he gave me a judgy look, and then walked away.

-

I was casually scrolling on Facebook, when I saw a familiar face. I clicked on it, and Jason's profile pulled up instantaneously.

"Mutual friends," I thought to myself, "Johnson Baker (Tinder Guy #3), Azeem Awani, Louis Romney, and....JOHNNY BELCHER?!"

Blair: HOW DO YOU KNOW JASON?

I waited in anticipation, and was playing Neko Atsume, when suddenly,

Johnny: His brother is an M4.
Blair: Introduce me.
Johnny: I don't really know him that well. Just add him on Facebook!
Blair: No, that's what weirdos do!

Okay, we can ignore that I did that to Louis Romney like, four months ago?

Johnny: Guys don't really care about things like that. Just add him, Blair.

So, somehow, I channeled my inner Kayresia, and I added AND messaged him.

Blair: Hey! We matched once on Tinder, but my friends got drunk and they unmatched me!
Jason: Haha now why would they do that?

I left out the part where we met a couple times in passing and that he was friends with my ex boyfriend. We talked for a little bit, and made some small talk...but he didn't make a move. And so, somehow, Louis Romney actually proved himself useful, and provided me with some pretty vital information.

"So, I'm trying to talk to your friend...is he usually shy and kinda awkward?"

"Yeah, he is. That's just his personality."

And so, in that case, I decided to take the initiative in this situation.

Blair: Okay, so, I'm gonna leave my number, because I'm definitely a lot more funny and cute in person- I'd love to hang out some time! And if you're not up for it, you don't have to say anything and I definitely won't take it personally. 630-555-1416!
Jason: Hey thanks, sounds good. This is kind of a busy weekend for me but we'll find a time!

And so, we texted a tiny bit, and ended up making plans for later that week.

-

"I have a good feeling about shy guy," Serena admitted.

"I do too, it's a strange kind of feeling."

"He might just be exactly what you need."
